Fighting against child sexual abuse: join the stakeholder consultation!

The Commission is organising online meetings with key stakeholder groups to gather feedback and data to support the evidence-based preparation of the new legislation to fight child sexual abuse.

The first meeting took place on 19 February 2021 with participation of close to 100 representatives of civil society organisations focused on children’s rights and in particular on the fight against child sexual abuse.

Further meetings are planned with privacy-focused civil society organisations and online service providers, among others. Valuable contributions from stakeholders to the development of the initiative will help the Commission to deliver an effective, practical proposal which adds real value in the fight against child sexual abuse.

Background

As stated in the EU strategy for a more effective fight against child sexual abuse, the Commission plans to publish the legislative proposal by this summer. This legislation will not only replace the interim derogation that the Commission proposed last September and which is currently in the last stages of the EU legislative process, but also cover other issues in the fight against child sexual abuse.

As announced by Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, the Commission has just launched an open public consultation to prepare a legislative proposal on fighting child sexual abuse effectively, including through the detection, removal and reporting of child sexual abuse online. National, regional and local authorities, civil society organisations, businesses and private individuals are invited to contribute. The consultation will be open until 15 April and it is available in the 24 EU official Languages.
