On 27 November, the European Parliament voted to approve the new College of Commissioners. Austria’s Magnus Brunner will be the new Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, marking the end of Ylva Johansson's mandate. The new College of Commissioners will start working as of 1 December 2024.
Magnus Brunner’s mission as Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration includes implementing the Pact on Migration and Asylum, strengthening Europe's internal security, and promoting integrated border management.
As outlined in President von der Leyen’s mission letter, Commissioner Brunner is expected to:
- Design and implement a new European Internal Security Strategy, strengthening law enforcement and judicial cooperation, and leading efforts against serious and organised crime, cybercrime, and terrorism.
- Oversee the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, developing a new and common approach on the return of irregular migrants, and leading the work in the fight against migrant smuggling.
- Promote integrated border management, strengthening Frontex, and working on ensuring a fully functional European digital border management.
