The EU in 2024: Check the main developments in the field of migration, security and Schengen

The European Commission has published its General Report on the activities of the EU in 2024, reflecting on the challenges of the last year and how the EU addressed them. The report summarises the main policy developments and how citizens benefited from them. 

Protecting people and freedoms  

In 2024, the EU took several actions to protect its citizens from threats both inside and outside its borders. The EU continued to boost European security and defence and introduced new measures to combat human trafficking, drug trafficking and organised crime. 

Additionally, 2024 marked the start of a new era in managing migration. With the Pact on Migration and Asylum now in place, the EU has the tools to manage migration in an orderly way based on the principles of solidarity and the fair sharing of responsibility.  

Another milestone was reached on 1 January when Romania and Bulgaria became full members of the Schengen Area after the checks on persons at the internal land borders were lifted.
