Commission proposal to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU

On 19 September, the European Commission proposed to extend the temporary protection of people fleeing Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, to 3 March 2025.

President von der Leyen announced the prolongation of the temporary protection in her address on the State of the European Union on 13 September:     

“Since the start of the war, four million Ukrainians have found refuge in our Union. And I want to say to them that they are as welcome now as they were in those fateful first weeks. We have ensured that they have access to housing, healthcare, the job market and much more. I am proud to announce that the Commission will propose to extend our temporary protection to Ukrainians in the EU. Our support to Ukraine will endure.”

The adoption of the proposal will provide certainty and support for millions of displaced people fleeing Russia’s war in Ukraine. It will also ensure their continued access to the labour market, education, housing, medical and social welfare assistance.

Additionally, it will allow EU countries to manage arrivals efficiently and guarantee a coordinated approach in the welcoming of displaced people, according to national capacities.
