Notes
- Arranged marriages are different from forced marriages. One difference with forced marriage is the element of choice in accepting or refusing the arrangement. However, the distinction of forced and arranged marriage is not clear-cut, as it is difficult to assess when the spouses have or have not been under pressure to consent to marry. One or both partners may be subjected to cultural pressures, which may in fact result in limiting the free will to contract marriage. And if at least one of the parties does not consent to the marriage, an arranged marriage becomes a forced marriage.
