On 15 November 2022, the European Commission held a CERIS event in Brussels in which participants discussed how to develop an EU-wide critical secure communication system for law enforcement, emergency and rescue services.

On 5 October 2022, DG HOME awarded the Security Innovation Award 2022. This award highlights the importance of EU-funded research in the field of Civil Security, and rewards great examples of Security Research Uptake.

Between January and April 2022, 27 applications were submitted for this award, resulting in a long and difficult final selection process, due to the high quality of the projects submitted for consideration. In the end, 4 projects were selected for their outstanding work in ensuring research upscale.

The “Civil Security for Society” Cluster is the Commission funding instrument that finances research to allow our society and, more specifically, security practitioners to dispose of state of the art tools and relevant knowledge in the critical domains of counter-terrorism, fighting organised crime.

From 30 June to 1 July 2022, DG HOME, the Research Executive Agency (REA), and DG CNECT co-organised the third Project to Policy Seminar for security research. Policy makers and project organisers shared knowledge to bring forth new trends and innovation in EU security policy.

A CERIS side event on Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Hazards CBRN) preparedness and response took place on 4 May at the CBRN-E R&I Conference in Lille and helped to bring stakeholders from many different areas together.
