Civil society organisations are key stakeholders in combatting trafficking in human beings. The European Commission has launched a Call for Expression of Interest in view of renewing the composition of the “EU Civil Society Platform against trafficking in human beings”.

The European Commission published its fifth report on the progress made in the EU in combatting Trafficking in Human Beings. The report outlines the main anti-trafficking actions from 2021 to 2024 and provides an analysis of statistics for the period of 2021-2022.

The main focus of the meeting was the international dimension of trafficking in human beings and the link between trafficking and migration, including migrant smuggling.

18 October marks the EU Anti-Trafficking Day. Thousands of trafficking victims are recorded in the EU but many remain undetected. For the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, the UNODC and the EU’s Anti-Trafficking Coordinator have issued a joint statement drawing renewed attention to the pressing issue of child trafficking, and urging accelerated action to end this abhorrent and universally condemned crime.

On 14 July, the revised EU Anti-Trafficking Directive enters into force with stronger rules to fight trafficking in human beings. The revised Directive introduces stricter criminalisation and provides stronger tools for public authorities to investigate and prosecute new forms of exploitation.

On the 26 and 27 of June 2024, the EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator and the Chair of Eurojust’s Anti-Trafficking Team organised the annual meeting of the Focus Group of specialised prosecutors combating trafficking in human beings.

On 17 and 18 June, more than 130 participants from EU Member States, Moldova and Ukraine, the EU Agencies and civil society organisations attended the EU Network of National Coordinators and Rapporteurs on trafficking in human beings meeting in Brussels.

On 27 May 2024, the Council has adopted new rules to reinforce the fight against trafficking in human beings.

On 21 May, the Commission opened for application a call for proposals under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund with a budget of EUR 6 million.
