Call for participants – Registrations now open: RAN Practitioners Webinar: Mental Health and P/CVE, a shared responsibility, 13 December 2023

Target group

The target audience of this webinar are practitioners working in P/CVE who would benefit from closer collaboration with either the mental health sector and/or the security domain.

Aim and background

Persons engaged in violent extremism with severe mental illness are a specific subgroup of the radicalisation population. Given the complex interplay between radicalisation processes and mental health issues, prevention of violent extremism requires intersectoral collaboration to detect and integrate relevant information at an early stage. When information is shared across agencies, this broadens the perspective and helps (mental health) practitioners draft informed and tailor-made interventions. Police and other law enforcement agencies benefit from cooperation with mental health practitioners, as they can help identify where mental health issues might play a role and how to act accordingly (‘is the person involved having mental health issues and is there a possible security risk?’). However, most multi-agency collaborations across Europe are not yet attuned to the complex interplay between radicalisation processes and mental health issues, which leads to challenges in working both in psychiatric settings and in security forces.

The aim of this webinar is to share the outcomes from the RAN HEALTH Working Group meeting and the RAN cross-cutting event on the topic of P/CVE and the collaboration between mental health practitioners and the security domain; moreover, it aims to provide inspiring examples for practitioners to take the next steps in their multi-agency collaboration.

Set-up

The webinar will provide an overview of the main lessons learned and recommendations from the RAN Mental Health Working Group meeting on 28-29 March and the cross-cutting event on 28 November on enhancing collaboration between the mental health sector and the security domain. It will also share recommendations and preconditions for setting up collaborations and will share an inspiring multi-agency initiative.
