Call for participants: RAN Webinar on emerging trends and developments in P/CVE: Anti-authorities narratives, 11 October 2022

This webinar will take place on 11 October 2022, 15:00 – 16:30 (CEST). This webinar is organised with the support of RAN Policy Support that has provided the speakers for it.

RAN Webinar

We are pleased to announce that the registrations for the RAN Webinar "Emerging trends and developments in P/CVE: anti-authorities narratives”, on 11 October (15.00 - 16.30 CET), are now open.

The target audience of this webinar is first-line practitioners from the prison and probation sector, social work, police, the mental health sector and schools, who are interested in learning about the implications of anti-authority extremism in the prevention and countering of violent extremism.

The rise of anti-authority extremism following COVID-19 policies has been explored within several RAN activities throughout 2021 and 2022, including during the RAN Thematic event ‘Conspiracy narratives and anti-government sentiments in relation to (V)RWE and other forms of extremism’ and the RAN cross-cutting event ‘Conspiracy narratives and anti-government sentiments’. In 2022 the shift of many anti-government narratives to the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to a regrouping of extremist actors and communities with further implications for P/CVE practice.

This webinar aims to disseminate to a wider audience the knowledge on anti-authority narratives and its implications gathered from research and from previous RAN events.

Two presentations will be provided by Teun van Dongen (ICCT, RAN Policy Support) and Kacper Rekawek (Center for Research on Extremism, C-REX, University of Oslo).

The speakers will respond to the following questions during their presentations:

  • What are the most recent developments when it comes to anti-authorities extremism and its narratives in the EU? What are the implications for practitioners?
  • What are the effects of the war in Ukraine for the mobilisation of extremist narratives and networks across Europe (covering aspects such as VRWE actors joining the foreign fighters movement in Ukraine, Russian propaganda and disinformation)?
