The European Commission has presented a Competitiveness Compass, the first major initiative of this mandate that provides a strategic and clear framework for Commission's work.
The Compass sets a path for Europe to become the place where future technologies, services, and clean products are invented, manufactured, and put on the market, while becoming the first climate neutral continent.
The Competitiveness Compass identifies three core areas for action: innovation, decarbonisation, and security. In the area of security, the compass emphasises the importance of integrating security considerations into EU economic policies. A secure environment is essential for EU firms' economic success and competitiveness.
The digital age is accelerating the speed of cyberthreats and cyberattacks. Entire economic sectors and essential services depend on the resilience of digital, transport and space infrastructure, energy grids, and technological hardware. As hybrid threats increase, the EU recognises the need for a closer alignment between the public and private sectors.
The upcoming Internal Security Strategy will set out a comprehensive EU response to face security threats, whether online or offline, and to ensure that security is integrated in EU legislation and policies.
