On 11 September, the Commission adopted a harmonised list of supporting documents for visa applicants from Mauritania.
When applying for a visa, applicants must submit supporting documents to prove that they meet the entry conditions to the EU (proof of financial means, purpose of travel, proof of accommodation). Currently, the required documents differ between EU countries. Therefore, the application process is more complex, and the requested documents depend on the Member State that handles the application.
The harmonised list of supporting documents will ease the application process for a Schengen visa of Mauritanian citizens. This is another step in the cooperation stemming from the EU-Mauritania Joint Declaration of March 2024, which launched a migration partnership and a migration dialogue.
The EU also plans to launch an information campaign in Mauritania. The campaign will explain the visa procedure to the public, dispell myths and false information, and provide practical advice for a smooth application.
Next Steps
The Commission decision adopting the harmonised list will be applicable immediately after adoption upon notification to Member States. Furthermore, the EU is working with Member States to ensure that consulates in Mauritania have enough resources to handle visa applications, based on the demand in the country.
