Description

Migrant women face added difficulties when settling in a new country, including due to gender discrimination and their additional responsibilities as primary family caretakers. The policy brief Addressing women’s needs in local integration strategies

argues that municipalities are uniquely positioned to adopt a women-centered approach to integration. Embedding such an approach could tackle discrimination, remove structural barriers and promote the long-term inclusion of migrant women.

The brief explores the main integration gaps for women and goes on to outline 7 key actions for municipalities to take. It concludes with a list of recommendations, which include, among others, childcare provisions, attention to the needs of vulnerable groups and the training of municipal staff. Each recommendation comes with a short but specific example of how the goal could be achieved in practice.

The brief was developed by the European Network of Migrant Women in collaboration with Eurocities and MigrationWork as part of the 2024-2027 CONSOLIDATE project, funded by the European Commission’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and led by Eurocities. The project will set up communities of practice and will support 12 local authorities in designing policy pilots for more effective integration.
