Webinar - Pedagogical collaboration in the neighbourhood

Aim and background

All partners in the neighbourhood play a role in creating places for young people to practice democracy. It is helpful if schools and partners in the neighbourhood work together to strengthen social capital and counteract processes of radicalisation and polarisation. In practice, however, we see that these collaborations do not always achieve the intended results.

Teachers, youth workers, police officers, social workers and community leaders have the ability to provide young people with a positive environment to learn and develop. If done right, these actors help young people to become more resilient towards issues like radicalisation and polarisation. The roles and opportunities of these fields are thus similar, but getting them to work together effectively is not common practice across all EU Member States. Their respective approaches might differ or even contradict each other, and many practitioners seem to struggle with establishing sustainable and valuable cooperation. For a more holistic and effective P/CVE approach, improved collaboration between the relevant local actors in the neighbourhood might be very beneficial.

The following key questions will be discussed:

• What barriers do we need to overcome to improve collaboration between youth workers, education providers and other actors with pedagogical influence?
• Which steps should be taken to establish this collaboration?

The webinar will feature expert input from Dennis de Vries - Peaceable neighbourhood (NL). The Peaceable Neighbourhood is part of the RAN collection of inspiring practices. Children grow up in different domains: home, school, street, organised leisure time etc. In some neighbourhoods, there is a gap between the socialising and parenting culture within these different domains. As behaviour is largely dependent on the environment, it is important to have a coherent supportive context for young people to grow up in. The aim of Peaceable Neighbourhood is to create more educational cohesion between these different domains by working together and sharing experiences. They created a network between different actors in the neighbourhood.

The Peaceable Neighbourhood model focuses on 6 phases:

• Phase 1: Parties in the neighbourhood are separate
• Phase 2: Parties form a chain
• Phase 3: Parties retain their colour, but speak the same (pedagogical) language
• Phase 4: Parties gather around a common (pedagogical) goal
• Phase 5: Parties are prepared to make a sacrifice for that common goal
• Phase 6: Parties are willing to allow each other in their own field for the benefit of that common pedagogical goal

The event will focus on disseminating knowledge to practitioners who do not hold substantial prior knowledge of the topic. However, due to the setup and room for discussion, potential attendees with previous expertise in the area are expected to benefit as well.
