EU Open Days 2023

Open DAys

Every year, we celebrate Europe Day by bringing the EU institutions closer to people in Brussels. This year, we open our doors again! EU Open Day takes place on Saturday 6 May.

DG HOME will be part of the “Safe Europe Village", which will focus on how to keep the EU safe and strive for equality and inclusiveness in the EU and beyond (e.g., EU customs and border protection, fight against fraud, terrorism, and organised crime, etc.).

We will showcase some security related projects and actions by our agencies:

1. Mine detection dogs
We will have dogs and their handlers outside of the Berlaymont building, showcasing the dog's abilities to search for explosives as well as mine detection equipment. Demo sessions will take place every half an hour and visitors will be able to actively engage with the dogs and their handlers. Learn more about the EU-Ukraine Mine Detection Dog project.
2. SHOTPROS
A state of the art security research project will invite visitors to experience a virtual reality police training. They will be put into real-life situations and have the chance to train their decision-making skills under high stress – just like future police officers do.
3. Europol
Will present an AI privacy enhancement tool, which is used in criminal investigations. It allows to detect and automatically remove (block) the faces of people in videos and images in order to use anonymised images for further processing.
4. Frontex
Will showcase equipment to detect fraudulent documents and will invite visitors to try it themselves and determine which documents are fake and which ones are real.
