Muttersprachliche Beratung: language advice helps migrants in Austria with work matters

The initiative Muttersprachliche Beratung, or Native-Language Advice, is run by the Österreichischer Gewerkschaftsbund - ÖGB (Austrian Trade Union Federation) provides advice in the native language of migrants who struggle to deal with legal and administrative matters for limited skills in the German language.

How it works

ÖGB offers free consultations on labor and social security law, and thus helps migrants navigate everyday working matters. These include, for example, consultations regarding issues such as the delayed payments of the 13th and 14th salaries of workers, working more hours than established, or understanding maternity and paternity leave rights, among others.

Migrant workers need to book consultations at the ÖGB service centre with a legal adviser speaking their respective language.

Results

The ÖGB has been offering the service since 1974, continually expanding its scope. Currently, consultations are available in Turkish, Kurdish, Romanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Arabic and German.
