Belgium's Confederation of Christian Trade Unions takes actions to combat prejudice on the labour market

Belgium's Confédération des Syndicats Chrétiens (CSC)/Algemeen Christelijk Vakverbond (ACV), or Confederation of Christian Trade Unions, has been working to deconstruct prejudices against people with a migration background, including asylum seekers and refugees, as well as women engaged in domestic and care work.

Results

The confederation has addressed the problem through

  1. information campaigns, publishing a number of awareness-raising materials such as brochures.
  2. A legal advice service providing training in relation to social security and labour migration policies in the CSC/ACV Brussels, with a committee of the works with and without papers also put in place within the confederation.
  3. The domestic workers league of the CSC/ACV Brussels provides individual defence and training over employment opportunities, labour rights, artistic empowerment and more.

The services are provided by and are targeted at women workers, involved in the care or domestic sectors. On 25 November 2022, the league tabled a motion with the Brussels Parliament asserting the rights of women workers against violence perpetrated by abusive employers, calling for access to legal and dignified work, as well as for access to training in (essential) sectors experiencing shortages in Belgium.
