Ministry of Internal Affairs

The Ministry of Internal Affairs is responsible for the policy related to public order and safety, as well as public administration.

  • It is responsible for implementing measures and actions regarding defense of fundamental human rights and liberties and public and private property.
  • It is in charge of preventing and countering terrorism, organised crime, illicit trafficking and use of drugs, human trafficking, irregular migration and cybercrime.
  • It develops objectives and guidelines of international activities in the area of public administration and internal affairs, according to the Government Programme and its obligations in international documents to which Romania is a party and the strategy for European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

General Inspectorate for Immigration (in Romanian)

The General Inspectorate for Immigration, as a specialised body of the central public administration, subordinate to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, is empowered to implement policies in the fields of migration, asylum, integration of foreigners and the relevant legislation in these areas.

It is also in charge of issuing work authorisations to non-EU citizens.
