Trainee in Cyprus

Are you a non-EU citizen wishing to carry out a traineeship in Cyprus? You can find information below on the conditions to fulfil and procedures to follow, as well as the rights you can enjoy during your stay.

Conditions

You can apply to carry out a traineeship in the Republic of Cyprus if you have a higher education degree for no longer than 2 years or if you are pursuing a higher education degree in a non-EU country. You must have a training agreement with a host entity/company in the Republic of Cyprus.

If you fulfil the conditions, you will be issued a residence permit.

Procedures

Where and how to apply

 

  • An application by the host entity/organisation in Cyprus, must be submitted to the Director of the Civil Registry and Migration Department.
  • The applicable fee amounts to €110.
  • Applications are examined within 90 days of submission, provided that they are fully completed and all the necessary accompanying documents have been submitted.
  • Upon approval, the host entity/organisation is notified by post to collect the permit at the Civil Registry and Migration Department.

 

Documents required
  • A valid passport for at least a period of 2 years or equal to the training period;
  • a medical insurance certificate;
  • proof of sufficient financial sources for the living expenses in Cyprus;
  • proof of home address;
  • a training agreement with the host entity certified by the Department of Labour, which includes description of the training program, duration of the training, the training position and supervision method, training hours, legal relation between trainee and hosting entity;
  • proof that the trainee has acquired a higher education degree for no longer than 2 years prior to the application or is pursuing a higher education degree in a non-EU country;
  • proof that the host entity accepts responsibility for the third-country national throughout the stay in Cyprus, in particular as regards subsistence and accommodation costs;
  • proof that during the stay the third-country national will have sufficient resources to cover the training costs;
  • proof that the third-country national is accommodated throughout the stay by the host entity and the accommodation meets the conditions set by the Cypriot Law;
  • a written declaration from the host entity that the traineeship does not replace a job.
Duration of validity of permitsResidence permits are granted for 6 months and are renewable, only once, for the period equal of the training agreement, provided that an application for renewal is submitted.
Further requirementsWhen you arrive in Cyprus, you must register at the District Aliens and Immigration Unit of the Police and undergo a medical check. You must also submit relevant medical certificates.
AppealsYou can appeal decisions related to your residence permit before the Administrative Court.

Rights

Change of statusThe trainee can submit the relevant application for the new status, if he/she meets the necessary criteria.
Family membersIt is not possible for the trainee to be accompanied by his/her family members.
Long-term residenceThe stay as a trainee is not counted in the period of residence to be eligible for long-term/permanent residence in Cyprus.
