Seasonal worker in Latvia

Are you a non-EU citizen wishing to carry out seasonal work in Latvia? You can find information below on the conditions, procedures and rights you can enjoy during your stay.

Conditions

To work and reside in the Republic of Latvia as a seasonal worker for a period up to 6 months within a year, you have to obtain a visa.

Procedures

Where and how to applyThe employer should submit an invitation to the OCMA.
FeesTFee for examination of documents submitted for application: the general fee is 60 euros, exceptions can be applied in accordance with the visa facilitation agreements.
Documents required

You shall present a valid travel document recognised in the Republic of Latvia and submit the following documents:

  • a visa application form filled out and signed,
  • a colour photography 35x45mm in size and not older than 6 months,
  • a copy of a valid travel medical insurance policy,
  • necessary subsistence means (salary) for seasonal workers should not be less than:
    • 933 euros for working in fruit-growing, live-stock breeding, hunting and related service activities,
    • 1232 euros for working in forestry and timber logging,
    • 994 euros for working in fisheries,
    • average salary in the Republic of Latvia for other branches of economy (1004 euros in 2019).

Duration of validity of permitsThe visa will be valid for a maximum of six months.
Conditions for renewalA visa can be renewed if the allowed 6-month period has not expired.
AppealsA third-country national has the right to challenge the decision on the refusal to enter the Republic of Latvia within 30 days after the decision is taken. A decision on the contested administrative act may be appealed to the Administrative District Court.

Rights

Change of employmentThe right to employment is tied to a specific position and a specific employer. To change employment, you must apply for another visa.
Change of statusIf you want to change your status, you should apply for another visa or residence permit.
Family membersFamily members can apply for a short-stay visa.
Long-term residenceSeasonal work is not counted as a valid period of residence to qualify for a long-term residence permit.
