Invitation: RAN Webinar on ‘Radicalisation Hubs in the EU’ - 17 February 2021 (16:00 – 17:45 CET)

This webinar will be held in English and will take place via WebEx.

While violent extremism is a global phenomenon, extremists start their radicalisation process in their local context. Radicalisation to violent extremism, however, is not happening everywhere. Even between cities, neighbourhoods or communities that are comparable in regards to political, social or socioeconomic circumstances or grievances, there are often very different radicalisation-related developments. In other words, some neighbourhoods struggle with a significantly higher number of radicalised individuals than others, making them ‘radicalisation hubs’ (also referred to as ‘hotbeds of radicalisation’).

Why do some neighbourhoods turn into radicalisation hubs while others, facing comparable challenges and factors, do not?

We are pleased to invite you to attend the RAN Webinar on ‘Radicalisation Hubs in the EU’ on 17 February (16:00 - 17:45 CET).

Background and aim of this webinar

The primary target audience of the webinar is first-line practitioners. This group includes youth and family workers, local civil servants, exit workers and educators, including staff from CSOs, but also communication specialists and law enforcement professionals. While many nowadays have heard about the ‘radicalisation hubs’, the webinar aims to provide the target groups with a deeper understanding of the topic.

This webinar will focus on so-called ‘radicalisation hubs’ introducing concrete case studies as well as practitioner oriented recommendations, some of which were generated by a RAN small-scale expert meeting on the same topic on 25 November 2020.

The goal of this webinar is to disseminate expert knowledge on this topic, by sharing key findings ofthe RAN conclusion paper titled “The Role of Hotbeds of Radicalisation” which will be presented by Alexander Ritzmann. In addition, Islamist and right-wing extremist radicalisation hubs will be presented and discussed by experts Paul Mentz (Germany), Mikkel Hjelt (Denmark) and one other speaker. Recommendations on the prevention or countering of radicalisation hubs, will also be shared at the webinar.

If you have any questions or remarks, please contact Rik Scheele or Alexander Ritzmann.
