Cyprus is an independent sovereign Republic with a presidential system of government. Legislative authority is exercised by the House of Representatives and the administration of Justice is exercised by the Republic’s separate and independent judiciary.
Cyprus is strategically located in the Eastern Mediterranean lying at the hub of three continents and close to the busy trade routes linking Western Europe with the Arab World and the Far East. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, with an area of 9.251 sq. km (3.572 sq. miles). The island enjoys the best type of Mediterranean climate with about 300 days of sunshine per year.
The Republic of Cyprus became a full member of the EU. Accession to the EU was a natural choice for Cyprus, dictated by its culture, civilization, history, its European outlook and adherence to the ideals of democracy, freedom and justice.
More information on the presidency and the government ministries is provided on the Web Portal of the Republic of Cyprus: www.cyprus.gov.cy
Cyprus has become a destination country for immigrants and it has faced increasing immigration flows since 2004, mainly due to its geographic location. This has led to several new legislative initiatives and the government is implementing a strategy based on both international and European law, through the adoption of international and European conventions, as well as on the harmonization of our national legislation with the Community acquis. The Ministry of Interior is the ministry in charge of implementing, monitoring and enforcing government policy on entry and residence of third country nationals in Cyprus.
The Ministry of the Interior is the coordinator of the Cyprus EMN National Contact Point. The CY EMN NCP is composed of the Asylum Service and the Civil Registry and Migration Department of the Ministry of Interior, and also of the Aliens and Immigration Unit of the Cyprus Police Department. The CY EMN NCP aims to secure a close exchange of information with policymakers at national level, to better understand the needs of the authorities involved, and contribute to the EMN activities.
