Luxembourg: 'Bad pupil' podcast

How serious is the promise of a fair school system in Luxembourg? This is the question of radio 100.7 in ‘bad pupil’, a series of podcasts in 6 episodes.

At the very beginning of the research, a sentence from the latest report on education can be found: “School paths in Luxembourg are (pre-) determined very early”. But what is the fairness of a school system where it is very often known from the second year of primary school whether a child’s school path will be good or bad?

Journalists Pia Oppel and Pierre Reyland take auditors to school for 6 episodes. They speak with children and parents, teachers: es and researchers. They go back to attempts to reform and explain the context of political decisions. They show what is not going into the school system from an early age – and what solutions could look like.

The podcast ‘Mauvais pupil’ is the French-language version of the successful format ‘Schlechte Schüler’, published in Luxembourg at the end of 2022. The Luxembourg school system is characterised by the presence of many non-Luxembourgish pupils and a multitude of language skills. Multilingualism is the biggest key challenge for the success and failure of both pupils in Luxembourg and the school system as a whole.
