The first meeting of the Commission expert group on the views of migrants took place on 12 November. The Commission created this group to involve migrants in the development of EU migration, asylum and integration policies. Consulting migrants in the design and implementation of policies that directly concern them is essential to make the policies more effective and better tailored to the needs on the ground.
The 24 members of the expert group, selected from a total of 354 applications, reside in 16 different Member States and represent a wide range of origin countries, from Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria to Brazil, Colombia, Senegal, Nigeria, Burundi, South Africa, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan. Some of them also represent organisations active on migration and integration at national or EU level.
This first introductory meeting included an exchange of views with the Commissioner for Home affairs, Ylva Johansson on how integration policies can be part of a broader effort to foster social inclusion and build resilient and cohesive societies.
The group was also informed on the preparation and implementation of the upcoming Action Plan on integration and inclusion and exchanged views on their expectations for the future work of the expert group.
