High Level Conference on the prevention of radicalisation

The Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN) High Level Conference on radicalisation (HLC) held on 4 November 2019 brings together the European Commission, Ministers, high-ranking officials of the EU Member States and practitioners to discuss ways forward to effectively tackle emerging challenges of radicalisation.

Organised by the RAN Centre of Excellence (RAN CoE), tasked and guided by the European Commission, the fifth edition of the HLC aims to provide a platform for practitioners, policy makers and high-level representatives to exchange ideas and share their experience in a more informal environment. The event will kick-off with the screening of "Le Jeune Ahmed", a 2019 movie by Belgian film directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, telling the story of a Belgian teenager, who embraces extremist interpretation of the Qur'an. This will be followed by a discussion with the directors and experts on whether the story told in the film is recognisable and whether things could have gone differently.

In break-out sessions, participants will address and discuss the events in the film and the reality, as well as possible responses and recommendations for preventing radicalisation.
