Free decryption tool could help victims of ransomware save millions

“Your personal files are encrypted. You can't get them back unless you pay a ransom” — Have you ever received this message? If this happens to you, never just pay. See No More Ransom for steps you can take.

Today the No More Ransom depository released a new decryption tool for the latest version of GandCrab, one of the most virulent strains of ransomware. GandCrab surpassed all other strains of ransomware in 2018, having infected over half a million victims since it was first detected in January last year.

The free tool released today was developed by the Romanian Police in close collaboration with the internet security company Bitdefender and Europol — together with the support of law enforcement authorities from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, UK, Canada and the US.

The best cure against ransomware remains prevention. Users are strongly advised to

  • use a security solution with layered anti-ransomware defences,
  • regularly back up their data, and
  • avoid opening attachments delivered with unsolicited messages.
