Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos participated in the debate on the importance of European remembrance for the future of Europe, which took place at the European Parliament on 18 September 2019. He recalled that, through its Europe for Citizens programme, the European Commission has been in the vanguard of promoting peace and EU values and ensuring that lessons of the past are remembered.
The following day, the European Parliament adopted the resolution on the importance of European remembrance for the future of Europe (PDF). The resolution calls for a common culture of remembrance which rejects the crimes of fascist, Stalinist, and other totalitarian and authoritarian regimes of the past as a way of fostering resilience against modern threats to democracy, particularly amongst the younger generation.
