Denmark: Conditions, dreams and future perspectives of those displaced from Ukraine

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has so far been involved in the reception and integration of 43 000 people displaced from Ukraine in Denmark. To find out more about the dreams and thoughts on the future of those within this group, DRC organised panel discussions with Ukrainians in 3 Danish cities. Key findings from these discussions are presented in a 15-page paper, with a summary in both English and Ukrainian.

Those involved in the panel discussions were divided into groups of adults and young people aged 17-19. In general, all participants said they were worried about the uncertain future they are facing as a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine and their temporary residence status in Denmark.

In discussion, the adult groups highlighted a lack of motivation to learn Danish and difficulties with building relationships and creating meaningful daily routines in Denmark. The younger people were found to be more determined and optimistic about building a future in Denmark, seeing their host country as a place in which they could reach their personal goals and enjoy higher standards of living than they were used to.

A recent study from Copenhagen University also examined the future perspectives of those displaced from Ukraine in Denmark and had similar findings: 60% of those interviewed (almost 7 000 individuals) said they hoped to stay long-term in Denmark.
