Call for Participants Western Balkans: Training for social workers “How to deal with returning foreign terrorist fighters and their families”, Tirana, 24-25 November 2021

RAN Practitioners Logo

The return of foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) and their families pose challenges for society and practitioners who work with them. Social workers play a pivotal role in the rehabilitation and reintegration process. During a two-day training (lunch to lunch), we aim to work at understanding and responding to cases of returning FTFs and their families from a perspective of rehabilitation and reintegration in the Western Balkans.

Main questions dealt with during the training:

  • What role can social workers play in the rehabilitation and reintegration of returning FTFs and their family members?
  • What are the participants’ experiences of working with returning FTFs and their families?
  • What are the specificities of working with returning FTFs and their family members, compared to working with other categories of individuals?
  • How can practitioners strengthen their knowledge, skills, and competence in working with this specific group of returnees?

Who are we looking for?

The target audience of this training are social workers who work with returned FTFs and their families or who are preparing to do so in the Western Balkans region. We expect an educational background in social work or working experience that equals that.

When selecting the participants, we will look for expertise, geographical spread and 1 participant per organisation.

About RAN

The Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN) connects frontline practitioners from across Europe with one another, and with academics and policymakers, to exchange knowledge, first-hand experiences and approaches to preventing and countering violent extremism in all its forms. Since its foundation in 2011, RAN has attracted over 6,000 practitioners from across the EU and beyond.

RAN in the Western Balkans

RAN in the Western Balkans will mobilise and connect practitioners in the Western Balkans and their expertise in support of comprehensive P/CVE efforts, mutual learning and networking among professionals, both within the region as well as with peers from the EU Member States.

Training sessions, workshops and study visits around themes such as the management of returning foreign terrorist fighters and their family members, and cooperation with (religious) communities in P/CVE and violent right-wing extremism (VRWE), will be organised.

The project is implemented against the backdrop of priorities outlined in the Joint Action Plan on Counter-Terrorism for the Western Balkans signed between the European Commission and the Western Balkans in October 2018.
