Call for participants: RAN POL meeting - Preventing and countering radicalisation of police, military and prison staff

RAN POL

On behalf of the RAN POL chairs Marzena Kordaczuk-Wąs and Luc Van Der Taelen, we are asking for your support. We are currently looking for suitable practitioners who have experience with preventing and countering radicalisation leading to violent extremism and terrorism within police, military and prison organisations.

Background and aim of this meeting

Radicalisation of police, military and prison staff is a pressing issue in the context of prevention and countering of violent extremism (P/CVE). It threatens the integrity of important state actors who play a key role in the safety of the country.

This meeting will address two types of responses. On the one hand, countering of extremism (CVE) within the police, military and prison organisations, and on the other hand, the prevention of radicalisation leading to violent extremism or terrorism (PVE) among the colleagues from these organisations. CVE covers detection and response, whereas PVE works more ‘up stream’ to create a professional culture and standard, resulting in a resilient organisation.

When a colleague, or group of colleagues, is involved in violent extremist ideology, the workplace management needs to step in with sanctioning and by reinstating a professional work culture and standards. This can be done through communication and training, for instance. Leadership, timely response, reinstating professional standards and obeying human rights are also key in preventing future cases. In this meeting, RAN POL will work with testimonies addressing this pressing issue.

We will follow the explicit Chatham House rules because of the sensitive nature of the topic.

Target audience

Police, prison and military management or staff who have experience with radicalisation within their organisation, or are working on preventing and countering extremism within their organisation.

Deadline

If you match the target audience and believe you can add to the discussion, please motivate your interest with an email to Steven Lenos and Ceren Özkan.

Preferably as soon as possible, ultimately before 2 March. Please note that this digital meeting only allows one (maximum two) expert(s) per EU Member State to attend.

We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
