11 March: 16th European Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Terrorism

On Wednesday, 11 March, the European Commission will organise a dedicated event in Paris to mark the 16th European Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Terrorism. This event brings together victims of terrorism, people who have been targets of an attack and those who have lost a relative, victim associations and first responders. European and Member States' representatives will also participate in this event to honour and commemorate the victims.

The event this year will take place under the theme “Growing stronger together”.

Practical Information

The event starts on 11 March from 9:15 CET and can be watched online via EBS

The event will be chaired by the Director General for Migration and Home Affairs, Monique Pariat. Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, will be there together with EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove, UN Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Ivanovich Voronkov and the Director General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay, among others.

Background

Providing support to victims of crime, including victims of terrorist attacks, is an important part of the Commission's work to address all dimensions of the terrorist threat. The EU has put in place a strong legal framework to protect victims across Europe through the EU-wide compensation scheme, the Victims Rights' Directive and the Directive on Combatting Terrorism.

In January 2020, the EU Centre of Expertise for Victims of terrorism set up by the Commission set up its activities aiming mainly to provide support to Member States to assist victims after a terrorist attack.

DG HOME works also closely with the Radicalisation Awareness Network working group on remembrance of victims of terrorism.
Victims' support and rights are also at the heart of work carried out by the the European Network of Associations of Victims of Terrorism (NAVT)
