Figures published by the European Commission show that the consulates of EU countries and Schengen associated countries received more than 10.3 million applications for short-stay visas in 2023.
As of 1 January 2024, Kosovo passport holders are allowed to travel to the EU without a visa, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This, in turn, also enables EU citizens to travel to Kosovo without issuing a visa.
After the Council’s adoption of the new visa rules, travellers to the Schengen area will be able to apply for their visa online. The new visa rules will modernise, simplify, and harmonise visa procedures through digitalisation, although the provisions will not be applicable immediately.
On 18 October 2023, the Commission adopted a proposal for a Regulation to amend the current visa suspension mechanism with the objective to address evolving migration and security challenges.

Citizens of Kosovo will be allowed to travel to the EU –and EU citizens to go to Kosovo- without requesting a visa, for periods of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. After the law has entered into force, the entire Western Balkans region will have a similar visa framework for the Schengen area.
