With the summer now firmly behind us, RAN Practitioners is gearing up for a flurry of meetings and events due to take place between now and the end of the year, including the RAN Plenary on 13th and 14th October. A range of topics will be explored, for instance the online dimension of P/CVE, digital literacy and hybrid ideologies. This Update will therefore take a look at one topic which is increasingly of concern to practitioners: violent left wing, anarchist and anti-establishment extremism. The issue includes the latest edition of the Spotlight publication, the latest episode of the RAN in Focus podcast series, and some of the recent papers produced by RAN Practitioners and its pool of experts.
The latest issue of the RAN Practitioners Spotlight magazine takes a look at the challenge posed by COVID-19, violent extremism and anti-government movements. The publication, which includes articles, interviews and case studies by RAN practitioners and Working Group leads, explores how conspiracy narratives have fostered anti-government sentiments, and how violent left wing and violent right wing extremist groups have exploited the COVID-19 pandemic to turn people to violence.
The latest episode of the RAN Practitioners podcast series, which hears from a RAN practitioner and an expert in the field – Nicola Hieke of the State Coordination Office Live Democracy! Bavaria (LKS) and Stephan Lewandowsky from the University of Bristol respectively – discusses the role of conspiracy narratives in fostering anti-government sentiments.
Paper
A paper published by RAN Practitioners in November 2021, provides a concise overview of, and updated figures on violent left wing and anarchist extremism (VLWAE). The purpose of the paper is to help practitioners to better understand the complexity of the phenomenon and to identify existing practices and programmes which can be implemented to address issues relating to this kind of extremism.

Personality disorders and mental illnesses with implications in preventing violent extremism
A recent paper by RAN Practitioners provides insights on the challenges practitioners face when dealing with radicalised individuals with personality disorders, which are: a lack of understanding on the interplay between these specific disorders and radicalisation; how this could lead to violence; and what this means for prevention efforts and treatment options. The paper summarises the main conclusions from a RAN Health Working Group meeting which explored a range of personality disorders, with a particular focus on ASPD.
