Broader Term(s)

1. Language analyses are usually made at the request of government immigration/asylum agencies attempting to verify asylum claims, but may also be performed as part of the appeals process for claims which have been denied or may apply in return proceedings of other irregular migrants. For further information see e.g.: Language and Asylum Research Group
2. Speech recordings are typically analysed to determine whether an applicant's speech patterns show expected features of the specific language variety spoken by their claimed group. The key question that can be addressed scientifically is not one of nationality but of language socialization and speech community membership, which is a sociolinguistic matter.
3. In 2004, 'Guidelines for the use of language analysis in relation to questions of national origin in refugee cases' were published which encompass minimum requirements and safeguards for competent professional language analysis. They serve as a reference point for governments seeking to know how to conduct their investigations in a professional manner.
4. IT does not follow a standardized, codified procedure for languages analysis.
