Irregular Migration Management Application (IRMA)

Definition(s)

A restricted and secure information exchange platform developed by the European Commission which connects EU Member and Schengen States, the European Commission, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and the relevant EU funded programmes at operational, practitioner level and which facilitates the planning, organisation and implementation of return and readmission activities with the objective of making return procedures more effective.

1. IRMAwas implemented on 1 September 2017 under the name ‘Return Management Application’ which was later changed to 'Irregular Migration Management Application', the acronym 'IRMA' remains the same.
2. IRMA contains information on best practices and guidelines per third country , legislation, return programmes, operational data on return operations and statistics.
3. IRMA aims at building synergies and enabling work in a mutually reinforcing way. It also allows Frontex to assume a more pro-active role in planning joint return operations .
