Definition(s)
An European Union agency which provides independent, evidence-based advice on fundamental rights to the relevant institutions and authorities of the European Union and the EU Member States in order to support them when implementing Union law, taking measures or formulating courses of action within their respective spheres of competence to fully respect fundamental rights.

Note(s)
1. The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights was inaugurated on 1 March 2007. It was established by Council Regulation (EC) No 168/2007 (FRA Regulation) as the successor to the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMCI).
2. Its tasks, which are laid down in Art. 4 of the Regulation, include information and data collection, research and analysis; advice to EU institutions and EU Member States; cooperation with civil society and awareness raising.
