Reframing masculinity for young men and boys

Description

This Academic Insights paper explores how contemporary understandings of masculinity shape the lives, behaviours, and wellbeing of young men and boys, with particular relevance for youth justice and probation practice. It argues that traditional masculine norms—such as emotional restraint, dominance, self-reliance, and toughness—can contribute to violence, poor mental health, risk-taking, and resistance to seeking help, especially when reinforced by online influences and the "manosphere." Drawing on research from psychology, sociology, criminology, and education, the paper advocates for reframing masculinity as a more inclusive, emotionally healthy, and equitable concept that allows boys to express vulnerability and build respectful relationships. It concludes that practitioners should adopt gender-informed, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approaches that challenge harmful masculine norms while supporting positive identity development, resilience, and social inclusion among young men and boys.
