Gendered radicalisation and ‘everyday practices': An analysis of extreme right and Islamic State women - only forums

Description

This research article, from 2022 and authored by Veilleux-Lepage and colleagues, examines gender dynamics in violent extremism and terrorism by analysing two women-only extremist forums: the Women’s Forum on Stormfront.org and Women Dawah on Telegram. It employs feminist methodology to show how these online spaces shape women's motivations and participation in extremist movements. It concludes that women-only forums facilitate discussions, share experiences, and allow women to exert agency, countering traditional gender roles. The findings highlight the differences in participation between genders and suggest that deradicalisation strategies need to address these gendered aspects, challenging the stereotype of women as passive actors in extremism.
