Since its founding in 2013, the AfD has quickly built up a core base of voters and now has a professional party apparatus. At the same time, an increasingly far-right extremist orientation has taken hold. Social media is used to polarize public opinion, particularly through the spread of misinformation. The AfD uses its financial resources—largely derived from taxpayer money—to attack democratic institutions and initiatives; its political platform proposes a nationalist and racist model of society that is unconstitutional.
